Rating government consumer protection agencies

Choice has given Australian government consumer protection regulators a bare pass, giving 6 of the 12 an "acceptable practice" rating and giving the rest a lower or no rating (here).

The full report (Good practice in consumer protection enforcement) suggests a Good Practice Model for consumer protection enforcement and greater reporting and accountability by regulators.

The report contains individual report cards for each regulator and the responses from 7 of the regulators.

The regulators assessed are:

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)
Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
Therapeutic Goods Administration
Australian Capital Territory Office of Fair Trading
New South Wales Office of Fair Trading
Northern Territory Office of Consumer and Business Affairs
Queensland Office of Fair Trading
South Australian Office of Consumer and Business Affairs
Tasmania Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading
Consumer Affairs Victoria
Western Australia Department of Consumer and Employment Protection
