The most frequent comment made whenever I tell someone that I'm leaving my firm to do something else outside of legal practice (but not yet identified) is "That's courageous". That worries me.
Sometimes I think they're saying "courageous, but mad", but sometimes it's "courageous, I wish I had the nerve to do that".
To myself I said "courageous, but that's not what I would tell a client to do". The courageous part seems to be leaping out into the unknown. But for me, I felt it was the right thing to do.
How many times have I seen employees quit after saying they had found a job somewhere else having just had a performance review saying they were totally happy ? Sometimes I can talk them out of it but sometimes I don't want to.
Sometimes I found out that employees had been working on their own business on my time!
So I took some Stress Tips and read John Clark's articles and did it my way.
When I told my partners that I wanted to pursue other interests before I had actually lined up something else, I was taking a chance that they wouldn't throw me out before I'd finished my search. After all, the usual motto of lawyers is "do unto others, before they do it to you".
They were shocked and surprised (which was the next most frequent response) but, after a while, supportive.
This blog will be a personal one, tracking the things that will help me find a path that satisfies my other interests.
